The artist and his princes
Ingres, a successful artist during the first half of the 19th century, was an unclassifiable, often visionary painter. Behind his apparent classicism lie a unique freedom and style that continue to capture the imagination today.
With the advent of the July Monarchy (1830-1848), Ingres enjoyed substantial support and a favourable environment in the Orléans family, enabling him to produce some of his greatest masterpieces. Originating from national and international collections, paintings and drawings commissioned or formerly owned by the Princes of Orléans will be reunited in Chantilly, alongside their sketches and variants.
They will allow visitors to understand the longstanding, methodical work of one of the greatest French painters, artist of princes and prince of artists.
