Treasures from the Reading Room
The Reading Room reveals a little-known aspect of its collections in this survey of the contemporary ‘bibliophile book’, its origins and trends.
The Duke of Aumale took a close interest in innovative engraving processes, photographic illustrations, contemporary artists’ books and other facets of the modern publishing trade. From the 19th century to the present day, bibliophile presses – publishers of high-quality editions for book lovers – have paid him tribute by depositing their works in Chantilly. These bibliophile collections feature artists such as Camille Corot and Edouard Manet, Jean Lurçat, André Masson, Edouard Pignon, Hervé Di Rosa and many others, and their production is not confined to classic authors.
